Whitt Sellers's model dino
Description from Whitt
A wooden, 3d model of a dinosaur skeleton. Each piece was made of an unfinished, light colored wood, came apart from one another, and were about half an inch (1.25cm) thick. The model was made to scale, about 3 feet (91cm) tall, 5 feet (152cm) long, and 1.5 feet (45cm) wide. The skull of the dinosaur had large, sharp looking teeth that hooked back a little an long snout, large talons on its big toes, smaller claws on its hands, and a fairly long tail for its size.
Design Process
Whit described the tragic ‘loss’ of his wooden model dinosaur in great detail. I immediately thought of the famous jurassic park logo which happens to be a T-Rex. I was assured It was not. Whitt mentioned that it was a smaller but well known species so I assumed it was something similar to a velociraptor. I then did a sketch based on the combination of his description and my limited understanding of dinosaurs. The first version stood too tall, much like a T-rex so I had to rework the spine for a more horizontal look.
Reflection
This was time consuming to put it lightly, but I understand this is how learning a new tool/method works. As someone who is terrible with numbers it took a while to get used to it. There was a lot of guessing and tweaking numbers to get the shapes I wanted. In most cases I managed to get it right but on some shapes it was ‘close enough’. I look forward to being more efficient in the language, and some of the examples I saw it seems to be very complex and intuitive. With enough practice I hope to look back at this asignment and wonder why everything is so overly complicated and messy. All in all very interesting step into how drawing with programming works. As a graphic designer Im used to drawing with preset tools that are much simpler, this was a peek behind the scenes of how things come to be.
